How to Help Babies Stay Exclusively Breastfeeding in the First Days of Life

http://ibclcinca.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/how-to-help-babies-stay-exclusively-breastfeeding-in-the-first-days-of-life/

We are seeing problems in early days in the hospital with babies ‘needing’ formula because they all seem to have low blood sugar and the mothers have low milk supply.  Make sure you know hand expression techniques to be able to give your colostrum if baby is not nursing well enough.

Hand Expression

What did mother’s do before breastpumps?  What can a mother do if she is engorged?  How can a mother who has to pump for her premature or sick baby increase her milk supply?

Hand expression!  This is the lost art that ALL women used to know and learn from watching their mothers and female friends from childhood.  Click on this link and watch the 7 minute video from Stanford University about how to do this.  Hand expression is a very useful tool for all mothers to know.

Is My Baby Getting Enough Milk?
http://ibconline.ca/not-enough1/

Many times new moms will ask if it’s OK to breastfeed when they are sick. Since germs are passed through mucus and spit, people tend to think they will be passed by breast milk as well. However, the body is fascinating in that breastfeeding mothers actually protect their babies—not infect them—by breastfeeding when they are ill.

Problems with low milk supply?  IGT can be a possible cause.  Most women have breasts that function normally, grow appropriately during pregnancy and make plenty of milk. However some women have difficulties producing enough breastmilk for their babies.  One of the possible problems is “Insufficient Glandular Tissue” or “IGT” which is a problem with the normal development of the milk glands.  This excellent article describes the problem and shows pictures of women’s breasts who have had this problem.
